American Eyes

I have walked down European streets in the past and occasionally seen someone who I knew was American. I asked myself how I knew this. It wasn’t because I knew the people. I hadn’t seen the passport.  Clothing nor hairstyle indicated what country the people came from. In fact, I could see by the look in their eyes that they must be American.

It is often stated that the eyes are the window to the soul. I realized that the look in the eyes revealed a type of optimism that is very American. We are taught from a very young age that we can be what we want to be, we can do anything we set our mind to, that America is the land of opportunity.

Walking down those European streets, I saw that many eyes were filled with a seriousness, perhaps the understanding of the reality of the situation.  But those American eyes – even their entire demeanor – revealed a naiveté, an optimistic belief that the world is their oyster.
